12/14 RIT Team to Clarks Mills

Verona RIT Team was requested by Vernon Fire Dept. for additional RIT personnel to the scene of a working Structure Fire in a two story private dwelling on Clinton St. in the village of Clarks Mills. Engine 6 responded with 6 RIT members. Units found a working fire that consumed most of the residence. Westmoreland and Clinton assisted in the suppression of the fire. Due to rapid fire growth a defensive attack was conducted. The fire was brought under control using several master stream devices. Verona units were released from the scene. Air Van 278 also responded. Lt. Kinne had the RIT Command and Clark Mills Asst. Chief Misiak had the overall Command.


12/12 MVA Rollover w/Injury New York State Thruway

About 3 p.m. Verona Fire Dept. was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover at 252.7 westbound on the Thruway. Rescue 1 arrived to find a SUV rollover over the median guardrail into the eastbound lane with the lone occupant trapped. The SUV was found rolled on its passenger side. The vehicle was stabilized using our rescue jacks, and then the cutters to begin to get the PT out. The PT had obvious head trauma, and due to extrication time Vineall 101 requested a helicopter to the scene. The A, B, C, D posts of the SUV were the cut and the windshield was taken out. Personnel then used the ram to spread apart the roof so units could gain entry to the PT. The extrication took about 20 minutes. The PT was extricated into an awaiting Vineall Ambulance. The Vineall Ambulance then transported a short distance to the Oneida Indian Nation Heli-Pad where Engine 1 was awaiting the arrival of Mercy Flight. The PT was airlifted to SUNY Upstate by Mercy Flight. Verona units cleaned, cleared, and then turned over the scene to New York State Police Investigators and Thruway Authority personnel. Rescue 1, Engine 1 and Engine 6 responded to the call. Chief Dodge the Thruway Command. Verona units were back in service around 5 p.m.


12/9 Mutual Aid to MVA Oneida Castle

Around 3 a.m. Verona Fire Dept. was dispatched to State St. in Oneida Castle requesting the JAWS to a MVA. Oneida Castle was on the scene a single vehicle MVA rollover into a tree with the lone occupant trapped in the driver’s seat. The driver also struck a utility pole in the process. The male PT had head trauma from the collision. Verona Engine 6 and Rescue 1 responded under the Command of Asst. Chief Clanton. Verona units took the roof and popped the driver’s door to extricate the PT. The extrication took about 20 minutes. Due to the PT condition and extrication Vineall 101 requested a helicopter to the scene. Mercy Flight was airborne and landed at a nearby church. The PT was then airlifted to SUNY Upstate. National Grid was also on scene. Verona units returned a short time later. Oneida Castle Asst. Chief Sweatman had the State St. Command and Chief 520 had the LZ Command.


12/5 RIT Team to Oneida Castle

Verona RIT Team was requested to the scene of a working Structure Fire in a two story apartment building on West Seneca Ave in Oneida Castle. Engine 6 and Rescue 2 responded with 6 RIT members. Units found a working fire on division 1 of the structure with negative extension to the rest of the residence. Vernon, Vernon Center, and Sherrill assisted in the suppression of the fire. The fire was brought under control quickly and contained the fire to a room and contents fire. Verona units were released from the scene. Air Van 278 also responded. Lt. Kinne had the RIT Command and Oneida Castle Car 1- Sweatman had the overall Command.



11/25 Fatal MVA Rt. 365 and 31

Just before Noon, Verona Fire Dept. was alerted to a MVA at 365 & 31 reporting unknown injuries. Rescue 1 was on the road and arrived a few minutes after dispatch to find a 2 Car MVA w/ serious personal injury. Rescue 1 then requested an additional rig from Vineall to the scene and that extrication was being started. The driver of a late model car was pinned after a broad-side hit to the driver’s door. Verona personnel took the roof and rapidly extricated the patient from the vehicle and into an awaiting Vineall Ambulance. Extrication took about 10 minutes. However the rescue effort outcome was the unfortunate passing of the patient at Oneida Healthcare Center ER from her injuries. Rescue 1, Rescue2, Engine 1, and Engine 6 all responded. Rt. 31 was shut down due to the wreck. Units remained on scene there a few hours for investigation by the New York State Troopers. Asst. Chief Simpson had the Rt. 31 Command.


10/29 RIT TeamàVernon Center


Verona RIT Team was requested to the scene of a working Structure Fire in a two story private dwelling on Churton Rd. in Vernon Center. Engine 6 and Rescue 2 responded with 7 RIT members. Units found a working fire in the basement of the structure with negative extension to the rest of the residence. Vernon, Sherrill, and Oneida Castle assisted in the suppression of the fire. The fire was brought under control quickly and Verona units were released from the scene. Air Van 278 also responded. Other Departments that were on scene were Westmoreland and Oriskany Falls. Asst. Chief Simpson had the RIT Command and 560-Chief Lenhart had the overall Command. Other Departments that were on scene were Westmoreland and Oriskany Falls.


10/7 RIT TeamàStanwix Heights


Verona RIT Team was requested to the scene of a working Structure Fire in a single level private dwelling in Camelot Village in Stanwix Heights. Engine 6 and Rescue 2 responded with 9 RIT members. Stanwix Heights, Westmoreland, and Clarks Mills were working on bringing the fire under control when the evacuation tones were sounded as flames ripped through the roof. Once a good amount of the fire was knocked down another offensive attack was conducted. Once the fire was brought under control Verona units were released from the scene. Air Van 278 also responded. Lt. Kinne had the RIT Command and 620-Chief Rundle had the Command.


10/5 MVA Rt. 31 and Stoneybrook Rd.


Mid-Morning brought a MVA w/injuries on Rt. 31 near Stoneybrook Rd. Upon arrival of Vernon Fire Dept. found 2 car MVA rear-end job with one female with a neck and back injury in the Verona Fire District. Oneida County Fire Control initially dispatched Vernon Fire Dept., because of the close proximity of the Town Lines. Verona units under command of Lt. Wright arrived to assist Vernon rescue personnel package the patient. The patient was transferred to an awaiting Vineall Ambulance where she was transported to a local trauma center. All units cleared a short time later.


9/12-9/14 Old Forge Fire School

Just like our Annual Field Days, the Verona Fire Dept. attended the Annual Old Forge Fire School. In all about 20 members attended this year partaking in various classes offered. Some of the classes and seminars include: Firefighter Safety and Survival, Landing Zone Operations, Controlling the door, and Initial Company Operations. Verona Fire Dept. also participated in the parade. Chief Dodge won Best Saluting Officer.


8/27 RIT Team to Vernon

The Vernon Fire Dept. was dispatched to a reported Structure Fire on East Seneca St. between Rt. 31 and Sconondoa St. in the late morning hours. Chief Nell was on location just doors down from the Fire Station with a working fire in a 2 ½ story private dwelling and established Command in front. Vernon Fire Dept. was sitting on a plug in front of the station and had quick work stretching the lines. Vernon Center, Sherrill, Oneida Castle, and Verona were the automatic mutual aid for the structure fire. Verona RIT team responded with Engine 6 and Rescue 2 with a full team. The team stood by and the ground ladders until the fire was brought under control. Verona units then assisted with overhaul and cleanup until we were released by Vernon Command. Van 278 also responded. Asst. Chief Simpson had the RIT Team Command.


8/21 Oneida County Fireman’s Convention @ Waterville

The Verona Fire Dept. attended the County Convention again this year. Although we didn’t win Bes t Appearing Company w/out Music this year; we did win Best Appearing Color Guard. This is the 3rd Consecutive year we have won that. Engine 1, Engine 4, The “T”, and Oneida County Air Van 278 were in the parade also. The members and auxiliary of the Verona Fire Dept. would like to say thank you to Waterville Fire Dept. for holding it this year.


7/26/07 FAST Team to Kinsley St. - City of Sherrill

At 4:22 a.m. the City of Sherrill Fire Dept. along with Verona Fire Dept. were dispatched to a Structure Fire on Kinsley St. in the City. Verona was requested for the RIT team through Automatic Mutual Aid. Oneida County 911 advised Chief Ray (Sherrill 510) they had several calls on this alarm. He then requested the Town of Vernon Mutual Aid Companies (Vernon, Vernon Center, and Oneida Castle) to fill the box. Sherrill 510 went on scene to find heavy fire showing from the First and Second Floors of side Alpha. Sherrill Engine 2 and Truck 1 went to work with Master Stream devices to knock down the bulk of the fire, and then entered the Charlie-Delta Corner of the structure to mop of rest of the fire with a few 1 ¾” hand lines. The fire was brought under control around 5:30. Verona units were released shortly before 7 a.m., Verona Car 8 (M. Kinne) had the RIT Command, and Chief Ray has the Kinsley St. Command


7/9/07 Senn Road Garage Fire

Around 4 a.m. the Town of Verona Fire Departments were dispatched to a Garage fire on Senn Rd. in New London’s First Due between County Highway 50 and Cornell St. New London 630 went on scene to declare a fully involved garage fire. The 30x20 Garage/Barn was struck by lightning in a series of Severe Thunderstorms that came through the area. 5 Departments in all battled the fire included New London, Durhamville, Verona, Vienna, and Stanwix Heights. Verona Responded Engines 1, 2, and 6 along with Van 278. The Fire was brought under control around 5:30 hours by several master stream devices. After overhaul and picking up Verona units returned into service just after 7 a.m. New London 630 (Chief Shoen) had the Senn Rd. Command.


6/26/07 Barn Fire in New London

Shortly after noon New London Fire Department along with Verona and Durhamville were dispatched to a reported Structure Fire on County Highway 50 in New London’s First Due. New London Car 1(Hartzog) arrived and assumed command with a 2 story detached garage/barn fully involved. Extensive Mutual Aid was called for manpower and tankers due to Temperatures approaching the 100 degree mark. A Fill-Site for tankers was set-up on Circle Dr. of Rt. 49 in New London. Verona Responded Engine 2 as an attack Engine, Engine 1 as a tanker, Rescue 2 with manpower to the scene, and Engine 6 stood-by at Station 1 for alarms in our first due. Van 278 responded also. Verona returned into service around 4 p.m.


6/14/07 House off in New London

Around 5:30 p.m. Oneida County Fire Control dispatched the Town of Verona Fire Departments along with County Car 274 for a house on fire on Happy Valley Rd. at Dwyer Rd. in New London’s first due. New London Car 4 went on scene moments later, reporting a single family double-wide trailer fully involved. Verona and New London units arrived a short time after at the same time. The family’s automobile was on side Delta in close proximity to the structure going also upon arrival. Defensive operations were declared when units started to arrive. A fill site was rendered on Circle Drive off of Rt. 46 in New London to fill tankers. The fire was under control shortly before 7 p.m. The house was a complete loss, and the American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the family of 5 that was a displaced by the fire. No one was home at the time of the fire. The fire in under investigation. Verona units cleared the scene around 8 p.m. New London 630(Chief Shoen) had the Happy Valley Rd. Command.

6/10/07 53rd Annual Verona Fire Dept. Field Days

Sunday embarked as the final day of the 53rd Annual Verona Fire Dept. Field Days. Besided the Friday night Severe Thunderstorms, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. By the looks of things this year we could be knocking at the door of a record year. The Field Days included entertainment each night, Hawkins Amusement Rides, Fireman’s Parade on Saturday night, and Fireworks display Sunday night. Like they saying goes each year: Live Music, Old Friends, and Good Food never ends in a bad time of coming out to the event. We would like to thank everyone that attended the 2007 Field Days and supported the Verona Fire Dept., we couldn’t do it without you. Hope to see you next year at the 54th Annual Verona Fire Dept. Field Days.


5/24/07 Back to Back Fires

At 14:07 Verona Fire Department along with the other Town of Verona Mutual Aid Departments were dispatched to a Fully Involved house fire on Irish Ridge Rd. near Germany Rd. Durhamville 540 went on scene with smoke and flames visible from Side Delta. Durhamville Engine 3 was the first to arrive and had a attack line to the rear of the residence. The fire started outside of the structure in the rear with minor extension to the rest of the residence. New London and Verona units assisted with overhaul and remaining fire however were redirected to another fire-This one in our own first due.


A minute after being toned for the Structure Fire in Durhamville, Oneida County 911 then dispatched Verona Fire Department at 14:08 to a Tractor Trailer Fire on Rt. 31 near Ostrander Rd. Automatically Chief Dodge requested 911 to dispatch Vernon Fire Dept. to handle the tractor trailer fire. Fire Control advised Vernon second call on that fire from a New York State Police unit on scene, stated that the trailer was fully involved and that the operator was at that time unhooking the truck from the trailer. Vernon Fire arrived and confirmed trailer was going good. The tractor trailer was carrying bailed straw(approx. 700-800 bails) that was owned and operated by Janowski Brothers Trucking out of Vernon Center. Vernon then requested Vernon Center with a full response for a engine, rescue, and tanker. Once Verona units arrived on scene of this incident and in a coordinated effort the majority of the fire was knocked down via several hand lines and master stream devices. Chief Dodge then requested the Town of Verona Grad-All to the scene to assist in the fire suppression of the underlying bails of straw. The trailer was completely cleared of all straw. Seymour Construction out of Westmoreland hauled all the hay of the highway. Rt. 31 was shut down for several hours. Units operating on the scene included: Verona, Vernon, Vernon Center, and New London Fire Departments. Verona units returned back into service shortly before 16:00 hours. Chief Dodge had the Rt. 31 Command.



5/14/07 Reported Garage Fire

Shortly after 10:00 a.m. Verona Fire Department was dispatched to a Garage Fire reportedly Fully Involved at the corner of Stoneybrook Rd. and Rt. 31 in Verona’s First Due. Upon arrival of Car 1 fire had appeared to be put out by the homeowner via a garden hose. The fire started by a generator operating within the garage. A passerby called the fire in as fully involved. Units cleared within a half hour.



5/13/07 Mutual Aid to Outdoor Fire in New London


Sunday afternoon New London Fire Department was dispatched to a brush fire on Cornell St. in the Hamlet. New London 630 (Chief Shoen) went on scene to find a fire in the woods, quite a ways off the road going good. The portion of woods contained garbage, old vehicles, and other debris. At that time he requested for Verona’s Mini-Pumper to the scene. After 630 requested the Mini-Pumper he then requested manpower and an Engine from Verona and a Tanker-Pumper from Durhamville. Verona’s Engine 3 hooked a 5” supply line off of New London’s Engine 2 and headed back into the scene to complete their water supply. With the booster reel, and two 1 ¾” hand lines in use the fire was brought under control. After a short period of overhaul and picking up, Verona units went back into service around 17:00 hours. New London Chief Dana Shoen had the Command.



5/8/07 Mutual Aid Structure Fire Stoney Creek Rd.- New London

During the mid-morning hours Verona, Durhamville, and New London Fire Departments were dispatched to a Structure Fire reported in the basement in New London’s First Due. Verona Engine 1 was enroute within minutes and arrived with New London units a short time after to find the bulk of the fire knocked down by the homeowners. With a good amount of smoke and heat still within the structure, two 1 ¾” hand lines were put into service. With Verona personnel checking the first floor and surrounding fire area for extension, all fire was deemed out and under control. Units ventilated the structure via Positive Pressure Fan set up in the basement. The fire started next to the wood stove in the basement which caught a nearby stack of wood and combustibles on fire. The fire was deemed accidental. Verona apparatus were placed back in service by 12:00 hours. New London Car 1 (D. Hartzog) had the “Stoney Creek Rd.” Command.



4/22/07 Stand-By in the City of Oneida


At 4:04 a.m. Verona Fire Department was alerted to Stand-By at the Oneida Fire Station as they were out to a working Structure Fire at City Lanes on Main St. in the City requesting 1 Engine and 1 Rescue. A firefighter suffered burns to his arm and his neck during the fire in which there was a Mayday called. The firefighter was Mitch Dryer Jr. Mitch’s father (Mitch Dryer Sr.) is a Past Chief, Member, and now a Life Member of the Verona Fire Department. Mitch has continued to improve at SUNY Upstate. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mitch, the Oneida Fire Department, and Mitch Sr. in these tough times. Verona personnel turned 2 calls while on Stand-By in the City and were back in service by 14:00 hours.



4/1/07 Reported Structure Fire

At 6:53 pm the Verona Fire Department was activated to a Reported Structure Fire at 4830 Old Oneida Rd. between Tuescher Rd and Tilden Hill Rd. Vernon and Vernon Center Fire Departments were also activated automatic mutual aid as Primary RIT Team. Initial reports were a fire in the chimney with possible extension into the residence. Verona Engine 2 called out of service in less than two minutes and was first due reporting flames blowing out the top of the chimney and all occupants out of the structure. Engine 1 and its crew under the direction of Verona Car 1 (Assist Chief Simpson) entered the structure with our thermal imaging camera to determine the extent of fire extension into the walls of the residence while the Engine 2 crew began fire suppression on the chimney fire with our chains. It was determined that the fire was contained inside the chimney pipe and there was no extension into the residence. Engine 6 & Engine 3 responded from Station 2 under the direction of Verona Car 2 (Assist Chief Clanton), and stood by with interior personnel staged in front of the Alpha side of the Structure and Engine 6 staged at a secondary hydrant. The chimney fire was brought under control and chimney pipe cleared in less than 20 minutes. Vernon & Vernon Center were cancelled enroute. Verona cleared the scene in less than one hour. Assistant Chief Simpson had the Old Oneida Rd. Command.


3/15/07 RIT Team to City of Sherrill

At 14:00 hours Verona RIT team was alerted for a working Structure Fire on East Hamilton Ave. in the City of Sherrill in a 2 Story Wood Frame Structure. Fast work by Sherrill, Vernon, Vernon Center, and Oneida Castle had the bulk of the fire that started in the kitchen with extention to the second floor knocked down within 15 mintues. Overhaul and clean-up were completed within a half hour. As Verona units were clearing this scene Verona Apparatus went enroute back to our First Due for a Car vs. Bus infront of the High School. This accident turned out to be minor with all students and other occupants involved signing off.


3/12/07 Reported Structure Fire to Train Derailment in the City of Oneida

At 7:10 a.m. Verona Fire Department along with Durhamville and New London were alerted for a Structure Fire on Center St. in Durhamville. Durhamville 540 went on scene with nothing showing at the reported residence; however had a huge header of black smoke eventually turning blue in color showing from the City of Oneida. It turns out that the reported structure fire was a Train Derailment with multiple railcars exploding on the Railroad Tracks in the City of Oneida in the vicinity of Cobb St. All units besides Durhamville went back into service, however eventually got called back to Stand-By in the City of Oneida Fire Station. While standing by Verona personnel never had any runs during that time. Two Haz-Mat teams were called to that incident and Verona returned back into service by 16:00 hours. Verona personnel were under the Command of Assistant Chief Simpson while we were on the Stand-By.
